July 1st - SYC Ovens Island Outstation

We left Reid Harbor about 7am & Rod checked in with the Coast Guard as soon as we got out of the Harbor.  We'll clear customs at Bedwell at 8:00.  The straits do not look good for today so we're headed to the outstation to wait for a better crossing - hopefully in the next day or 2.  It's another beautiful day with temp 58 already.

Shadow was in his cubby hole on Talia's bunk as soon as the engines started.  But today he came out on his own after 1/2 hr & has been sleeping next to me on the couch...much better than yesterday.

We are staying at the SYC outstation which is close to Ladysmith Harbour, Telegraph Harbour, Chemainus & Nanaimo.  In 1965 Past Ćommodore Wally Ovens purchased & gave the island to SYC.  It's roughly 200' by 800'.  It's a lovely island with no power & some walking.  The outstation is across the bay from a First Nation reservation & you often see some of the children coming over to swim, even tho they technically are not supposed to do that.

We arrived at 12:10 & it was 80'.  No other boats there so I stepped off the swim step & got a couple of lines & then Rod came to help with the rest.  Sun screens went up immediately so windows could be opened without Shadow escaping.  Even the flybridge was too hot to sit on.  No other boats came in today - probably because people are waiting until after the 4th.

Barbecued hamburgers for dinner, with homemade rhubarb & salad.
